Lakme Fashion Week kicks off with Barbie

The 10th Lakme Fashion Week opened with the Barbie All Doll’d Up show, because the global fashion icon and every girl’s best friend turned 50 this year. Top Models like Indrani Dasgupta, Anastacia Durata, Montu Tomar and Diana Penty featured on the show. They wore shimmering short and frilly dresses in bright colours like pink, yellow and blue and sparkling gowns. Dazzling earring, necklaces, hats and bags also made an appearance on the ramp.


SHINING Star by Get Far opened the show. Barbie Girl by Aqua and Hot Stuff by the Pussycat Dolls were among the songs the models were seen strutting their stuff to. Their demeanour was very feminine and playful, just like Barbie’s and their bright smiles lit up the ramp. The make up was girly and pink. Marc and Waluscha Robinson’s blonde and blue-eyed daughter Coco Chanel dazzled on the ramp as the surprise package of the show. The audience hooted and clapped when the doll-like beauty walked in as I’m A Barbie Girl played in the background. She also made an appearance at the end of the show with her beautiful mother.

Katrina Kaif, dressed in a multicoloured short dress that was bright blue, yellow and pink, was the showstopper for designer Neeta Lulla’s daughter Nishka Lulla, who designed the pretty frock.

Indian Designers Should Modernise, Not Westernise

Known for his flamboyant and futuristic designs and creative skills, designer Manish Arora feels that Indian designers are still confused between the modernization and the westernization of their garments, which in turn hampers their growth internationally.

“All Indian designers need to understand the fact that in order to excel in the international market, we all have to focus on the modernity of the garment and not on the Western look. This means that we have to take Western ideas and use Indian sensibilities to make it a global product,” Arora suggested while speaking at the International Herald Tribune Sustainable Luxury Summit here.

“Unfortunately most of the Indian designers are confused between these two different terms, which in turn affects their global presence,” he added.

The session, on “Building a global Indian Brand” also focused on the fact that collaborating with various brands also helps in creating an international brand image for a designer.

Arora has collaborated for the ‘Fish Fry’ brand with Reebok under which he has created women’s party wear shoes. Apart from this, he is associated with brands like cosmetics giant MAC, Walt Disney, Nivea and a few more.

Vintage Has New Appeal as Australians Tighten Belts

A not-so-new fashion trend is sweeping many parts of Australia, where thousands of people are flocking to vintage fairs to pick up unique, and inexpensive, apparel during the economic slowdown.

Museums and collectors have usually shown the most interest in vintage fashion in the past, along with brides-to-be and stylists, said Fiona Baverstock, who along with her husband Keith organizes some of Australia’s biggest vintage fashion fairs.

But now, a lot more people are buying quality, used clothes, shoes and accessories as the economic recession curtails spending, she added.

“I think people look for value when times are tough,” said Baverstock, organizer of The Way We Wear fashion fairs.

“And they know if they buy a nice 1930s piece it’s going to be well made with nice fabric and no one else is going to have one,” she told Reuters.

Australia moved a step closer to recession earlier this year when the economy posted its first contraction in eight years. The number of unemployed people has also increased, while full-time jobs dropped sharply.
